How to Wash Fire Retardant Clothing

Fire retardant clothing has become a quintessential thing in many industries such as oil, mining, chemical, Defence, etc. Its demand has increased drastically and due to its higher use, there are many questions about how we should take care of it.

What is the best way of washing it so that it lasts long?

Many people think that FR clothing needs special laundry service but it’s not true. Home laundry is also very effective and safe.

Fire retardant clothing needs special attention when it comes to washing it. Otherwise, washing can affect its production negatively. That's why we need to give special care to wash it. Here are the few practices that will help you to wash protective clothing.

Never Use Hard Water: Hard water is considered to be bad for Flame retardant clothing due to its high mineral content such as calcium and Magnesium and that are highly flammable in nature. That can make your cloth more flammable. Instead of hard water use soft water, it has very little Calcium and Magnesium content which makes it ideal for washing FR wear.

Maintain Water Temperature: Water temperature has a huge impact on Fire retardant clothing. To maintain the quality of FR clothing you need to check the water temperature each time whenever you are going to wash it. Ideal water temperature is 130° F to 140° F and when it comes to dry it makes sure fabric temperature does not exceed 270° F to 280°F.

Like other clothes, protective clothing also has a shrinkable characteristic, and sometimes it becomes shrinkable during the drying process. It generally happens within the first 3-5 wash so never overdry it. Generally, it can be avoidable if you wash it in warm water instead of hot water.

These are the general rules but always double-check the tag which is located on the inside of clothes.  Whenever possible consult the clothes tag because the manufacturer knows the best.

Never use:

Liquid chlorine bleach.

Fabric softener.

Detergent with fabric softener.

Oversized wash load.

Never use any bleach, vinegar, or any other additives, it can degrade the quality of your protective clothes.

Never use fabric softener, starch, or any other additives. It is considered harmful to Flame retardant clothing.

Inspect Your Garment Carefully: After washing your FR clothing always make sure all flammable components such as oil, gas, grease have been removed before the garment is worn again. If there are still stains left to wash out, in that case applying detergent directly to the spot. And never wear FR Clothing, if it is not washed properly or if any flammable elements yet need to be removed.

Only proper washing with every possible measure of protective clothing will make sure your protective wear will last longer and protect you, the way it should protect you.
